Organised by Lukenya University | 26th March 2023 | Mtito Andei, Makueni County

Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests, and advocates for environmental sustainability,

I am honored to share with you the inspiring initiatives undertaken by Lukenya University, a fully chartered, not-for-profit institution located in the heart of Makueni County at Mtito Andei. As a fully residential university, we are committed to providing high-quality education to a diverse community of learners from Kenya and East Africa.

In line with our dedication to making a positive impact on our local environment, Lukenya University has launched a visionary initiative to plant one million tree seedlings in the next five years in the Mtito Andei/Kibwezi East Constituency area. This endeavor is a testament to our university’s commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable practices.

Recognizing the crucial role that tree planting plays in mitigating climate change and enhancing resilience, our focus is on planting dryland indigenous trees that are well adapted to the unique climate and weather patterns of Kibwezi. To ensure the success of this ambitious project, we are collaborating closely with esteemed partners such as the Kenya Forestry Research Institute and local nurseries. Together, we identify and acquire the correct species varieties, ensuring that each tree planted is strategically chosen to thrive in its environment.

Since the inception of this program, we have witnessed the power of collective action. By bringing together various Government and Non-Government organizations, we have successfully planted over 220,000 seedlings in the Mtito Andei/Kibwezi area and beyond. It is with great pride that I share our most recent accomplishment, a collaboration with the Office of the 1st Lady – H.E Mama Rachel Ruto, on November 13th, 2023. On that remarkable day, over 25,000 trees were planted, marking a significant step towards our goal.

As we continue this journey, Lukenya University remains steadfast in its commitment to creating a sustainable and resilient environment. We invite all stakeholders, both within and beyond our community, to join hands with us in this noble cause. Together, we can make a lasting impact on the landscape, fostering a greener, healthier future for generations to come.
